|
Welcome to part three of 'By the Numbers', an in depth look at the Cougars regular season. We started with the situational, then moving to the opponents, and now finishing with a breakdown of individuals on the team. There is no 'I' in team, and the Cougars play that way. They win as a team and lose as a team, however in this edition, we'll highlight some of the individual numbers that have made this Cougars season such an entertaining one. 1 - The number of ties that the Cougars had this season. It came against the Fraser Valley Bruins. It's tied for the least number of ties this season, with the Thompson Blazers. 2 - The number of shutouts this season for goalies Jared Rathjen and David Readman. Jared's came in a 13-0 demolition against Thompson on November 6th, and David's came 3 games later in a big 3-0 effort against the South Island Silvertips. 4 - The number of players who have played all 40 games. The telling statistic about this, is that defencemen Raymond Grewal and Justin Duncan have played all 40 games, and have spent most (if not all) of those games paired together. That kind of chemistry is invaluable at the serious end of the season. 4.9 - The goals per game figure for the Cougars, which is the highest in the league, just ahead of the Giants at 4.875. 6 - The number of PIMs earned by Harjas Grewal, which is the lowest among players this season (excl Braaten). Harjas played 36 games this season. 9 - The number of Cougars who have scored 20 or more points this season. Gordon (60), Johnson (54), Lloyd (54), T. Witala (41), C. Witala (38), Fjellstrom (34), H. Grewal (29), Connolly (27) and Harris (20). 4 more players scored 19 points. 12 - The number of consecutive wins the Cougars put together between October 10th and November 28th. The Cougars outscored their opponent 79-22 in that time. 20 - The number of wins by Jared Rathjen this season, the most in the league. 28 - Number of goals scored from the Cougars blue line. The only Cougar not to score a goal yet is Colby Braaten (has only played 7 games). The blue line accounted for 14.2% of all Cougar goals, however, when factoring in assists, the number increases significantly. Out of the 511 points scored by Cougar players, 23% of them came from the blue line, not including the 4 assists currently credited to Colby Braaten. 29 - Luke Gordon's regular season goal tally, which is a new Cariboo Cougar record. The old mark was 28 by Brett Bulmer. 33 - The number of points that Cougar forward Seb Lloyd has scored since Christmas. Seb is on a 12-game point streak, dating all the way back to the all-star game. Seb also has the highest points per game mark at 1.8, a number that would have netted him 72 points (a new Cougar record) had he played 40 games. Seb was sidelined for 10 games with a broken arm earlier in the season. 37 - The new record for assists in a single season, set by Seb Lloyd. The old mark was 35 set by Brett Bulmer in 08/09. David Stephens scored 33 last season en route to his Cougar-scoring-leader season. 60 - The final regular season point tally for Luke Gordon, which is the 2nd highest on record for a Cougar player, bested only by Brett Bulmer's 63 point effort in 2008/2009. Luke is also the 2nd player to reach that 60-point plateau. 111 - The number of penalty minutes that Tyson Witala earned this season, which is the highest mark since Kyle Webber's 128 in 07/08. In fact, no Cougar has gotten more than 100 PIMs since that season, where 4 Cougars (Webber, James Cannon, Isaac Haack and Stewart Lambert) passed the century mark. The all-time record though is 145 set the season before by Justin Bardarson. 811 - The number of PIMs earned by the Cougars this season. As mentioned, Tyson Witala was the main contributor, however Levon Johnson (96), Chase Astorino (80) and Chase Witala (77) all contributed significantly. |
