Life is slowly becoming back to normal for the Cariboo Cougars these days.

The defending BCMML champs made a statement this weekend with a pair of convincing victories over the previously undefeated Greater Vancouver Canadians (GVC) at Kin 1.

On Saturday, the major-midget Cats rolled to a 4-2 against GVC thanks to goals from Braeden Young, Lane Goodwin, Matthew Marotta and Brandon Dent.

Cariboo completed the sweep thanks to a 5-2 victory and a very dominant performance on the power-play from the unit of Hunter Floris, Mason Richey and Craig MacDonald who combined for nine points, much to the delight of head coach Tyler Brough.

“It was tough to not leave them out for the entire two minutes but you want to keep the gas tanks full but when they have possession for a minute and a half and they are moving the puck around getting scoring chances it’s tough not to have them on the ice a lot.”

Floris was easily the game’s first star thanks to a hat-trick performance against Canadians goaltender Elliott Marshall.

After dropping both games on opening weekend to the Valley West Hawks, the Cougars have picked up three wins and a tie in their past four games.

Brough believes the team is starting to gel with all the fresh new faces in the lineup. “A couple guys maybe needed a few games to get their feet wet and get comfortable. A lot of these guys who are from out of town are getting comfortable with new billets and school so you have to take that into consideration.”

“I think we have done a great job over the past couple of weeks in correcting our problems and our team is moving in the right direction.”

Richey and Paul Hauk also potted singles for the Cougars while Marcus Allen picked up both wins in net.

The home stand will continue for the 3-2-1 Cougars next Saturday and Sunday when they host the North Island Silvertips at 4 PM and 10 AM from Kin 1.
